Illustration, diagram and template creation
At GlassArt Design, a large part of the role of designer entails the creation of custom artwork for leaded glass projects. This process involves developing a concept based on reference and/or inspiration images provided by the client, then translating that concept into a line drawing that is suitable for production.
Illustrating for leaded glass can be a bit tricky, because there are a few limitations to be mindful of (all lines must connect, no interior 90 degree angles, etc.) Once the artwork is approved for production, GAD's talented leaded glass specialist carefully cuts all of the glass pieces according to the diagram, then assembles them with lead came and solders them together.
Color vs. Texture
This window went through several revisions before going to production. The client had started out wanting a bold, colorful leaded glass installation for the space between their bedroom and master bath. Over time, and with guidance from the sales team, they eventually decided subtle and textural was the way to go.
The original concept was a splashy, dynamic art piece with green glass. Realizing that their original plan didn't quite match the tone of the space, they requested more muted colors with softer lines, before eventually opting for a combination of etched and patterned glass with no color at all.
